Nesconset Fire Department, Company 3 (Fire Police) currently consists of 11 active members who respond to a wide variety of calls for service. Of these 11 members, they are the most senior members of the department, ex-chiefs and ex-officers of our Department, which brings years of experience, dedication and knowledge to our Department.
The first Fire Police squad created in New York State was in 1839 as part of the New York City Fire Patrol. They assisted in protecting the interests of Insurance Underwriters. Their initial duties were to protect the property in the mercantile district of New York City from burglars and vandals.
Fire Police in New York have evolved into an organization of dedicated members responsible for various tasks at today's fire and emergency scenes. Traffic control, perimeter control, scene preservation are just a few of the duties they perform.
All Fire Police Officers are sworn "Peace Officers" taking an oath of office at Town Hall. Each sworn member receives credentials from the Suffolk County Sheriff's Office indicating he/she is a Peace Officer for the department. That means they have the authority to enforce law and make arrests. (Disobeying their directions can be dangerous to emergency personnel as well as to the impatient driver.)
